Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz

The hotel is located adjacent to a ski area and has a beautifully modern design and lovely gardens. The room was large with a dressing area and large bathroom. The bed was comfortable with a nice down comforter. There was a large spa with a variety of pools, sauna, etc. We ate in the restaurant for two evenings and the food was delicious. Their wine list was extensive, and their wine specialist was very knowledge and helpful. They also had a very large breakfast buffet. This is a very good hotel.

I was quite disappointed with my stay at Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz. Upon booking, I opted for an upgrade that cost an additional €150, which I felt was excessive given that it was primarily for accommodating my 1.5-year-old child. While I understand that hotels often charge for upgrades, this felt particularly steep, especially considering the overall experience. Moreover, I was surprised to find that only one bottle of water was provided for our group of five. In a family-oriented setting, I would have expected more thoughtful amenities to cater to larger groups. This felt neglectful, especially after the additional expense for the upgrade. To add to my frustration, the view from the living room balcony was far from relaxing. It faced a construction site, which meant we were constantly subjected to the noise of trucks loading and unloading. This completely detracted from what should have been a peaceful getaway. Overall, my experience at the hotel left much to be desired. I hoped for a more enjoyable and accommodating stay, but instead, I walked away feeling unsatisfied and frustrated.

The hotel is large and comfortable, and well-located for access to the Kronplatz. The service from the staff is excellent, and they are very helpful in recommending activities in the area. The rooms are large and comfortable, though the views may be a bit limited. The hotel is located next to cornfields and a barnyard. The main level pool is right next to the barnyard so there is plenty of mooing and a bit of barnyard odor. The spa facilities are outstanding, with adult only (no clothing in the saunas) and family pool areas and plenty of relaxation areas. The rooftop pool is clothing optional, but you are a bit on display from the people working the farms around so you may want to keep your suit on. The half board is a good value; the food is good but not exceptional. The views from the top of the Kronplatz are excellent, 180 degrees. We have not skied there but with lifts coming to the top of the Kronplatz from all directions and rather limited runs, I have to guess the crowds would be crazy.

The hotel is stylishly decorated in a quiet area near the lift to Kronplatz. However several things made this not a nice stay that I somewhat regret not just cancelling and paying the €300 fee. I booked a loft suite which is the second largest category and is supposed to be for families or friends. However the first issue with this room is its design: two large windows from the living room right into the bathroom and shower. No blinds, no way to block the view, so if you like me are traveling with friends or family, you will have no privacy in the bathroom. Such an unfortunate and inconvenient design. Second, our room was full of bugs. And not just one or two flies, but like 30-40. I called down and asked for help, a girl came and handed me a can of bug spray and left, no offer to help exterminate them, no help to clean up the dead bugs, no help to change the sheets which were covered in spray and dead bugs. This in no way is 5 star experience, I was ready to leave immediately when this happened, and their lack of assistance only added icing to the cake. I’ve attached photos… would you sleep in that bed?? At check in I told them I wanted turn down service every night and wanted them to make the second bed in the room. They said they would come by 7:30pm while we were at dinner. Came back at 9:45, no turndown service. I called and asked to have the second bed made up, the girl on the phone just said “sorry there’s no more housekeeping.” And hung up. Really? I called two more times before they brought bedding, but I had to make the bed myself. The next night I called down again to ensure I’d get turndown, but this evening, they took the bedding off the double bed and put it on the second bed. This literally makes no sense, why would you take the pillows and duvet off of one bed to make the second bed and take away the other set of bedding? I called down and asked for it to be corrected, again the same response, “sorry there’s no more housekeeping.” Not acceptable. Lastly, on check out, there was a problem with the bellman, he was complaining about taking our bags from the room, and he parked our car in the area away from the cover. It was raining so he just put the bags outside and walked away. I asked him if he was going to pack my car, and he said “no it’s raining” while wearing a full length rain coat. Really? Then he said “if you move the car to the cover, I can help you”… shouldn’t he move the car since he parked it in the rain to begin with?? We were the only guests leaving, it’s not as if they were crowded or busy. So I walked to the car in the rain and circled around so it was under cover, and he still left. I walked after him and said “it’s under cover now, you can pack it” and he just responded “your bags are too heavy” and walked away. Absolutely unacceptable and what a terrible send off to someone who just paid over €900/night for a room. There were more issues beyond this (aircon automatically resets daily to heat at 22 degrees, no matter what you have it set; it is mandatory to be nude in the spa, you will be yelled at and I didn’t like this, it should be your choice; there was no herbal tea at dinner even though they serve it at breakfast and in the spa, waiter refused to get some from “the other kitchen”) but I don’t need to belabor all of this. The point is, in no way was this experience worth what I paid, and I don’t understand how this property meets the standards of the Leading Hotels of the World. The worst hotel experience I had my whole trip in the alps.

We highly recommend Falkensteiner as the perfect holiday getaway. Surrounded by beautiful nature spots to explore, you'll still find yourself tempted to stay in the hotel and indulge in its exceptional amenities, particularly the pools and spa. The half-board option, with its delicious à la carte dinner and delightful midday snacks, enhances an already wonderful experience. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!
