Canyamel Classic

I stayed at the Canyamel Classic in Sept 2024 with my husband for 7 days and my brother and his wife. The hotel is well situated and very close to a lovely beach. There are local shops and cafes within walking distance and the area is clean and tidy. The staff were pleasant but not over friendly - except for Philip (reception) who was exceptionally helpful and amenable. The room we were allocated was clean, albeit basic. Both my brother and his wife and my husband and I had rooms with 2 single beds pushed together. This isn't unusual in a hotel, what's unusual is they weren't made into a double bed - ie with a double sheet/duvet. There were signs asking to save water but the plug in the sinks was either missing or didn't retain the water in the sink, which is a shame. The hotel was undoubtedly 4* at some point, however, I don't personally feel it warrants the rating now. In my experience, it's a 3* at best. One lift was broken throughout the stay (it didn't go to the 3rd floor). Water or refreshments weren't available - although we were advised a complimentary bottle of water was given in "premium rooms". I've stayed in a basic hotel which has tea/coffee facilities, so it seemed strange for a 4* hotel to offer nothing. The hotel is tired looking and in need of refurbishment and repairs in many of the rooms. The chairs in the main dining room and games room are ripped and torn, which gives doesn't do the hotel justice. Although all inclusive, the food and drink isn't available 24/7 - once the main restaurant has closed though, there are biscuits or crisps and drinks available at the bar. The pool was a decent size, but very cold as it relied on ambient temperature. Again a shame as no one really used it. The hotel has a variety of games on offer and a dedicated games room along with games (table football, darts, board games) and snooker which has a charge. It's a welcome change and definitely a selling point in my opinion. As some other reviews have mentioned, the hotel does have a majority of German guests, this only became slightly problematic when trying to book a day excursion. We eventually did through All Tours who were very friendly and helpful. It did mean we had to join a German group with a German speaking Guide. Yvonne (the Guide) was very accommodating and did her very best to include us and update us where possible in English. The food lacked variety and was seldom hot (temperature). There was a BBQ area serving freshly cooked fish and meat which improved things slightly. Tea/coffee was from a machine and only available in the main restaurant at breakfast - otherwise you had to go to the bar. Overall, it was a disappointing experience as there are certain expectations for a hotel claiming to be a 4*.

Before you read this review I just want to state that this is based on a 5 day stay at this hotel at the beginning of August 2024. I am not a negative person and write what I consider honest reviews. Please feel free to check some of my other hotel reviews. As my TripAdvisor name suggests we are British. On arrival check in was very straight forward and easy. Our room was not ready, but it was expected so no issues there. We arrived about 12.30 so we're able to take advantage of lunch. To be honest the food choices were not the best and this would prevail throughout our stay. My wife and I don't consider ourselves fussy eaters, but we struggled to the point on our last full day our lunch consisted of chips and bread due to the "beef" being so tough it was Inedible. We got our room at about 1.45 pm (earlier than expected) Like a lot of hotels you need to put your room card in a slot to activate lights and A/C. We noticed straight away that the aircon was not working! I reported this immediately to reception and was told it would be looked at, but they were unable to get in touch with the engineer straight away. No real issue. At this point we decided to not unpack the case, but sit by the pool. No issues with sunbeds, there was always beds available throughout the day. A positive We went back to the room later in the afternoon and nothing had been done. I went straight back to reception (different receptionist) and found out that our issue hadn't even been logged. The receptionist came up to the room with us and stood on tiptoe right under the A/C vent, held her hand up to it and said its working fine. She gave us a spare key card for the room so we could leave it in the slot and left. After dinner and going out for a walk we returned to the room (5 hours) to find it was still hot and stuffy. Another trip to reception resulted in talking to a manager who promised it would be sorted or at least have a fan put in the room. Didn't happen I spoke to a different receptionist the following morning who immediately sent the engineer to the room. All he did was take the main control panel out of the bathroom ceiling and show me it wa on the highest fan setting. TBHat this point I gave up we weren't there long enough to spend so much time with it The food is not the best and seems to be primarily geared to the German tastes, there were more of them than Nrits at the hotel. I was never good at languages at school, but have travelled extensively and never had a problem until I came here. A lot of the staff don't appear to speak or understand English, but seem to be the opposite with German. It makes ordering a drink at the bar interesting. I struggled with a coke and fantastic orange one day. The pool area was always clean and as I said earlier there was no shortage of sun beds. The animator Mohamed has been mentioned loads of times on other reviews snd I am inclined to agree with everything said about him. He has loads of energy and doesn't get upset if you don't join in. On a positive note the hotels location is perfect, a few shops and restaurants nearby. It's safe to walk outside the hotel at night and the bus stop is not too far away making the rest of the island accessible A question we quite often get asked is "would you recommend this hotel?" Unfortunately on this occasion it's no! Others may like it, but it wasn't for us.

The Canyamel Classic offers a pleasant escape with its idyllic setting. The hotel's architecture and grounds contribute to a relaxing atmosphere. Our room was comfortable. The pool area is a tranquil spot to unwind, and the hotel's location provides a convenient base for exploring the surroundings. We particularly appreciated the exceptional service provided by the animator, Muhammad Eysmert. His enthusiasm and dedication to creating a fun atmosphere for guests were commendable.
