This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, and I have stayed in a lot. This was the only hotel available when I booked and now I know why. Sadly this is not going to be a good review, however, one that I do suggest you read. I booked Merryan, having previously stayed in Hotel Orlovetz, as Merryan was the only hotel that had availability for my chosen dates. I read the reviews and thought it looked ok. I booked a twin room with balcony, half board with buffet breakfast and evening meal. Arrived at the hotel and was provided with very little information from the male receptionist, checked into our room to find no balcony and the beds were awful. It looked like the mattress had been a memory foam and had remembered every single person sleeping in it for the last ten years, the mattress was so bowed in the middle we considered sleeping on the floor. I actually let it go. Evening meal and it was a buffet, although a very limited choice and not great quality, with pink chicken. I also noted that there were very few people in the restaurant. Morning arrived, again a buffet breakfast, not great quality. After breakfast and asking where to get the shuttle bus for skiing, we found we were standing in the wrong place, although that’s where we were told to stand, also the bus driver asked us for our bus tickets which, we had not been provided by the hotel reception. Fast forward to evening meal. Upon arriving back after skiing another equally inept male receptionist asked us to choose from a set menu which had prices alongside. After explaining that we were half board he said ok and we went to our room, showered, which incidentally, showered over the toilet, and the whole floor of the room, so that every time we entered after had to remove our socks and dry our feet on the way out. We then went to the restaurant. The waitress was surprised to see us as she had been told by the receptionist that we were not eating as we had food in our room!!???? After some discussion, we received an apology, sat down to then be told it was a set menu as we were two of only four people in the hotel. Reluctantly we chose, received our food which was, quite frankly, awful. We left the majority and when asked if there was anything wrong we advised it wasn’t nice. We left, no offer of anything else. The next morning went for breakfast to be told we were the only two in the hotel and it was again a set menu. Again reluctantly, but being British, stayed and ordered an English breakfast. We received an egg, piece of bacon, cucumber, tomato, cheese, and jam all on the same plate!!!???? The male waiter, kept looking and playing on his phone, which was extremely off putting with background music on It was yet again awful and we left for skiing quite angry and actually depressed. That evening again were told we were the only two in the hotel so again a set menu, which was the same as the night before, I advised that I wasn’t happy and wanted to see the manager. I was told she would be here the following morning. I advised that I wanted to see her at 8am and promptly told the waitress we were going out to eat elsewhere. I must add that the female waitress was apologetic. The next morning, again a set menu, the hotel manager walked in and I advised I needed to speak to her. Told her I was not happy about the lack of information, our room and the lack of buffet breakfast and evening meal as that is what I had booked. I was then advised that we could be moved to a different room with balcony and could be provided with a small buffet if we chose. I advised that we had not been offered this previously, that the food was poor and in fact the first night the chicken was pink in the middle. We went to our room to discuss what we would do, checked online for the Hotel Orlovetz and managed to book a room for the remaining four nights of our stay. Proceeded downstairs to advise we were checking out and would pay after skiing. We were then offered a discount off a stay in 2024, to which I advised that I would under no circumstances be returning to this hotel. I can say that the female waitress and female Manager were both apologetic and looked to sympathise. The male contingent were awful. The manager allowed us to leave our cases in the hotel until after skiing. Upon returning, we had to be let in the room by the cleaner to retrieve our suitcases, paid, which I thought was a lot considering what we had managed to eat and the experience we’d had, and promptly left to walk to the Orlovetz. The Merryan was then empty and the manager explained this was due to the lack of snow and people had cancelled. Upon arriving at the Orlovetz the hotel was packed with people, vibrant, bright and extremely welcoming. It felt like we had come home. We checked in and went to our room with a balcony and a shower that didn’t soak the toilet or floor. Proceeded to the Perelik (twinned with Orlovetz) for our evening meal, which incidentally was far better quality and the choice was endless. (It was a bigger hotel) If you have managed to stay with this review and read to the end, and are considering booking the Hotel Merryan, I strongly advise you not too, it is shocking and makes Fawlty Towers look good!!

To piękny hotel i zdecydowanie polecam.

My daughter (15) and I spent the week here from Boxing day to 02/01/24. It was fabulous! The staff were fantastic, all spoke good english and were very helpful, all of the time. It has a traditional Bulgarian feel to it and its decor. The room was spacious and spotless, cleaned every other day, more than I was expecting! We stayed half board and were very impressed with the variety available at each meal time. Breakfast included a range of cereals, with bowls of fruit/nuts/grains free to add. Yoghurt and fresh fruit. Good selection of meats, cheeses and salads. English style cooked ,meats, eggs, fried bread etc. and finished off with breads and preserves. What more could anyone want for breakfast. Evening meals were of similar offerings, meats, cheeses and a variety of salads. The hot selection always included at least two meat dishes and one fish dish, with a variety of sides. Desserts included cupcakes, sweet tarts, baklava and fruit. It may not have had pizza, chicken nuggets or burgers on offer but we ate those on the mountain. Food was brilliant. A gala dinner was served (waiter service not buffet) on New Years Eve, with traditional Bulgarian singer and pipe player, followed by music and dancing and the finale of champagne while watching the fireworks that the hotel provided, a wonderful celebration enjoyed by all. I have previously stayed at the Perelik (pre and post refurbishment) and the Snezhanka and I found this hotel to be much more guest focused and welcoming than the others.

I stayed at the Merryan Hotel in February 2023 on my first ‘mum & boy’ ski holiday with my 6 year old son. Thankfully I did not go on my holiday with high expectations as I had no idea what to expect, and I’m glad I didn’t! Unfortunately the Merryan hotel was pretty disappointing. On arrival we checked in and found that we had been given a room with a double bed despite requesting a twin. It was approx 2am so we just decided to deal with it the next day as the chap on reception seemed very vague. We were told by our travel rep the next day that they would be able to give us a twin room instead but on asking at reception later that day, the girl on reception told us that there were no other rooms available as the hotel was full. Later that evening a different lady (who seemed far more knowledgeable, perhaps one of the management) working in the restaurant told us that there was actually a room available after all but we would need to move that night - it was already too late for my little boy who was tired so we just decided to put up with sharing a bed for the week. The bed was also pretty dire with big indents where others had slept. Evening meals in the hotel were served 7-9pm. This was too late for a family friendly hotel, as younger children generally like to eat earlier on so they can get to bed at a decent time. The choice of food available was also quite limiting and typically Bulgarian, some evenings weren’t too bad but other evenings it was poor with very little variety or options for younger kids. It was also all served rather cold and there was no microwave there. Disappointingly there were no drinks included either, unlike the evening meals we have had in other hotels. Just some bottled water would have been a nice offering. The staff in the hotel all seemed a little vague as if they didn’t really know what was going on. There was no proper explanation about anything when we arrived, I had to ask about everything. The ski bus situation was very poorly explained, we had to work everything out for ourselves pretty much and they didn’t give us tickets for the bus on the first day, so the bus driver wasn’t impressed with us! The staff were generally pleasant though and my little boy always liked to say hello. The young lady on reception with glasses was always friendly & kind. Drink options from the bar were a little limiting - no Baileys or fruit gins which are so popular in the UK now. One evening I ordered a latte at the bar and took it down to my room. Once there I noticed the drink looked odd as if the milk had curdled. I took it back up to the bar and the bar man took the milk out of the fridge that he had used, took a drink and nearly threw up! Thankfully he made me a new one but it put me off ordering any more drinks there. I was rather surprised that the hotel had no lift - we were 5 flights of stairs down to our room and this was particularly tricky when trying to get heavy cases up and down! The stairs were also all tiled and pretty treacherous when wet. The spa was reasonable, good steam room & sauna, though the hot tub was definitely not very ‘hot’ and the whole place smelt very stale! When we first arrived I used the fridge to put my eye drops in which needed to be kept cool. The next morning they felt warm and the fridge did not appear to be on. I reported it to reception and they sent a maintenance man to look. He concluded that it wasn’t even plugged in! And to plug it in there was a big heavy desk to pull out of the way so I’m not sure how long it had been unplugged for! The room/hotel had some pretty noisy plumbing issues. Some nights our room was quiet but other nights we had strange banging/knocking noises in the walls which went on all night constantly, along with water gushing noises in the bathroom which sounded like a water feature! These kept us both awake quite a bit! Thankfully the double glazing in the room was pretty efficient, as the hotel was quite close to a pub called the White Heart which was pretty lively & loud in the evenings. The bathroom being set up as a wet room was odd but ok, however the shower curtain came across the room so that you were basically showering with the toilet!! This was a bit too weird & made us cringe a little! The hotel cleaning staff seemed very good at their jobs and friendly! I’m afraid I won’t be rushing back to stay at the Merryan Hotel. Despite the hotel issues we did have a wonderful holiday!

This hotel is outstanding. The staff go over and above to make you feel welcome and will do anything to make your stay better. Rooms are warm, cozy, towels changed everyday and the hotel is immaculately clean. It is on the main street. Typically Bulgarian food (which even if you don't like the staff will try to make something for you). Will definitely be back, great hotel.
