As the biggest of the Greek Ionian isles, it's best to explore Kefalonia alongside an expert. Argostoli's harbour is one of the few natural harbours in the Med – it's protected by two peninsulas and the waters are deep enough to provide anchorage to large boats. Take one look at the place, and you'll see why its scenery was snapped up as the setting for Hollywood blockbuster, Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Strolling along the promenade, we'll head to a geological phenomenon known as the Katavothres sinkholes, where water mills once harnessed the power of the Ionian Sea.Then, it's up into the tree-studded hills to visit one of Katarina's favourite spots. ‘With its gleaming Doric columns and enviable position overlooking the setting sun, Saint Theodore Lighthouse is one of Greece's most romantic places,' she says. We'll also pay our respects at the Acqui Division Memorial – a sobering monument to a WWII massacre. Finally, take a seat at the seafront Vinaries tavern. With the sound of waves for company, enjoy local dishes and drinks under the pine trees – the perfect way to round off the day.
