Edam & Zaanse Schans: Windmills And Cheese
Edam might conjure up images of rubbery red cheese, but it’s not the only thing the Dutch town has to offer – as you’ll soon discover. Before you arrive in Edam, you’ll make a stop at Zaanse Schans. This place is like an open-air museum of wooden windmills and houses, which recreate the look of a traditional 18th-century Dutch village. There are workshops that hark back to the era, too – think clog carving and barrel making. After you’ve had your fill of history, you’ll drive to Edam for a walking tour. With gabled houses, hand-operated bridges, cobblestone streets and neat canals, this place is a sleepier, less-trodden version of the country’s capital. Finally, you’ll get to taste some of the cheese that the town is famous for at the Jacobs Hoeve farm. Your tasting includes six different kinds of Henri Willig cheese, with a side of mustard and red wine.
